Howard County Stands Strong: Celebrating Diversity, Rejecting Fear, and Embracing Inclusion

At Luminus, we believe Howard County’s diverse population is something to celebrate. Regardless of who occupies the White House, we will not allow a culture of mistrust, fear, and division to take root—one that prevents our neighbors from accessing essential public resources like healthcare, education, and safety.

Howard County’s strength lies in its diversity, inclusivity, and unwavering commitment to human dignity. When the County Council lawfully enacted the Liberty Act in 2020, and voters decisively rejected an attempt to repeal it in 2022, our community sent a clear message: we are a welcoming county that prioritizes the privacy, safety, and well-being of all residents, regardless of their immigration status. This law affirms that no one should live in fear of seeking help, attending school, or contributing to the community they call home. We are grateful to County Executive Calvin Ball for standing firm in his protection of all of the residents of Howard County.

America First Legal’s attempts to undermine Howard County’s Liberty Act and spread fear are not only harmful but also misguided. Their focus on divisive tactics attempts to erode the trust that Howard County has built over years. We know that immigrants are integral to our shared prosperity, contributing to our economy, paying federal, state, and local taxes, starting new businesses, enriching our culture, and strengthening our social fabric.

Now more than ever, it is crucial to remain vigilant and steadfast in upholding our welcoming principles. This moment calls for action, not complacency. We must ensure that public institutions remain safe spaces where all individuals feel protected and supported, regardless of their immigration status. We reject scare tactics and divisive rhetoric as they have no place in our community.

Together, we must resist efforts that sow fear and instead foster a culture of trust, solidarity, and inclusion. Luminus stands firm in its mission to support and empower all who call Howard County home.
