“Letters from our Team” – What do you do from the heart? by Nicole Guimarães

“What do you do from the heart?” (O que você faz de coração?). In Brazil, this is a very common expression that refers to when you do something that you genuinely love. It’s a question that comes in our minds as we reflect on our 42-year journey at Luminus.

My journey here began as a volunteer, working alongside recently arrived Afghan families in Baltimore City. Despite language barriers, we found a way to communicate through gestures, smiles, and hugs. It was a profound human connection that left a beautiful mark on my heart.

Somewhere along the way, something changed inside me, and I realized that this wasn’t just a volunteer role – it was my calling. And so, I joined Luminus. Our work isn’t merely about “helping” people; it’s about illuminating paths to empowerment. We aim to equip our clients with the tools to lead lives where they no longer need our assistance.

I’ll never forget the day I met a Ukrainian client face-to-face. She embraced me tightly, expressing her gratitude for the support she received from Luminus in obtaining her driver’s license and landing her first job. In that moment, I knew I was exactly where I should be.

I won’t sugarcoat it; our work isn’t easy. We witness pain, sadness, and fear in the eyes of our clients. Most of them left their homes with no other choice. However, when we see a family take their first steps toward independence, we’re reminded that some things are truly priceless – as we say in Brazil.
