Immigrants Strengthen Maryland’s Economy

Immigrants Strengthen Maryland's Economy

What the Governor's office says, and where to find help

Immigrants are our neighbors, our nurses, our child care providers and our small business owners. A fact sheet from the Maryland Governor’s office, Mass Deportation Hurts Maryland’s Economy, puts numbers on what many of us see every day.

Some of the numbers

  • About 29 percent of Maryland’s registered nurses, 33 percent of its child care providers and 36 percent of its construction workers are immigrants.
  • Immigrants are about 30 percent of the state’s entrepreneurs.
  • Immigrants add an estimated $85 billion a year to the state’s economy and pay about $15.8 billion in federal, state and local taxes.
  • The fact sheet projects that mass deportation could eliminate 115,000 jobs in Maryland, including 50,000 held by U.S.-born workers.

These figures come from the Governor’s fact sheet, which does not list its sources. We share them as a summary of what the state is saying, and we will add sources when they are available.

Where to find help

The Governor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs keeps a list of free and low-cost resources that it has reviewed, including legal help, health care and emergency planning for families with children. See the state’s Get Help list.
